Seems just about anyone can get a dating reality show these days. Every time I turn around, another new one pops up. Now, I’ve admitted before that I’m ridicuously addicted to them, but do they really work? Do these people really find love on TV?
It really does seem that anyone can get their own show. Everyone from aging rock stars like Bret Michaels to Flavor Flav to Antonio Sabato Jr. to Ray J to the loser of said shows is apparently given the opportunity to find love on the small screen.
Sadly, the statistics show that they don’t. Bret Michaels last round, Rock of Love Bus, paired him with Penthouse Pet, Taya Parker. Reportedly, according to Bret, they see are still seeing each other but only on a “fun” level and he is also seeing other women. He also says he’s open to doing Rock of Love 4. Ray J and Cocktail, aka Joanna Hernandez, have also reportedly called it quits and season 2 is in the works. In fact, one report I read said Ray J signed on for season 2 while season 1 was still airing.
Real Chance of Love with losers Real and Chance, brothers who both lost I Love New York are on their second season. Daisy de la Hoya, loser of Rock of Love 2, recently wrapped her show picking London while viewers were already setting their TiVOs for her second season.
So why does it seem these pairings never seem to work? Well, first of all, it’s TV people. It’s a reality show. The very nature of the beast is the first problem. I mean, is it really about love or is it about ratings?
Secondly, let’s think for a second about the caliber of the constestants. Bret Michaels’ shows are full of strippers, centerfolds, and party girls. The same can be said for many of the other shows. And what about the recent tragedy involving Megan Wants a Millionaire, with Rock of Love 2 Megan Hauserman, where contestant millionaire Ryan Jenkins allegedly murdered his wife/girlfriend and then, reportedly, took his own life while police in two countries were looking for him?
Seriously, you have to wonder who screens these people. The truth is that strippers and party girls make for good trash TV. Think back to TV Land’s The Cougar. No male strippers. No centerfolds. Just a group of pretty seemingly regular guys. And the lamest, most boring dating reality show in the history of TV.
Yet, those looking for love on TV seem to sincerely think they’re going to find it. Even with his ex-wife as one of the contestants and his domineering mother putting her two cents worth in and orchestrating things behind the scenes, Antonio Sabato Jr. says he’s honestly looking for love. I think I’ll email him my number so he can call me when it all comes crashing down.
Thoughts?

Yeah, a lot of those off-network/cable versions are too raunchy for me.
