Sex ed is one of those parental responsibilities that often goes by the wayside. Parents are often either uniformed themselves or too embarrassed or whatever. And sex ed in schools has been long debated. Now, teens have another option.
And while some will debate it, the truth is the need for sex ed is really not debatable. Being uniformed about sex leads to higher teen pregnancy rates and STDs. In fact, in 2006, the CDC reported that 1,000,000,000 young people had STDs. So where is a teen supposed to get reliable information? The same place they are most comfortable…online.
There are, of course, concerns. While the information is there and available, sometimes someone to talk to about it is just as important as getting the information itself. And, while there is a lot of good information out there, I would think there is just as much bad information. There is also information slanted to a group’s own agenda or point of view which, again, boils down to having someone discuss the information with.
While it’s at least available, a child’s first teacher is their parent and parents should, at the least, help guide their teens to filter through the information they find online.
