Redefining The Cougar Or Boring America to Tears?

A few weeks ago I reviewed TV Land’s The Cougar and, truth be told, I really wasn’t very impressed. In this day and age of dating reality shows, it truly is a “yawn.” I tried to be open minded and give it a chance but the truth of the matter is watching it bores me to death. In fact, I was watching it the other evening before I had to go to a meeting and, when I told my friend what I had been doing before I picked her up, she asked in disbelief if I liked it. No. I don’t. It bores me to tears.

In fact, I don’t know those poor boys aren’t bored to tears and fighting to get the hell out of the house! It’s lame. Period. The challenges are lame, the dates are lame, the dialouge is lame. There is nothing about it that holds a viewer’s attention. It’s all I can do not to scream at the TV, “It’s okay boys. I’ll come save you and we’ll liven up this damn party!” If I was a betting girl, I’d bet there won’t be a season 2. Sponsors are probably kicking themselves even as they watch their money swirling down the drain.

Now, don’t get me wrong. Stacy is a perfectly nice lady. She’s beautiful. She’s sweet. She’s just boring as hell. In this clip from TV Guide channel’s Reality Chat, she says that she saw the show as an opportunity to redefine how America sees a cougar. Pretty sure she’s done that but certainly not in the way that I had hoped.

Even the vivacious Vivica Fox seems to have lost some of her vivaciousness. It’s almost painful to watch her deliver her lines and directives which seem forced and stilted. It’s almost painful to watch.

Yes, I had high hopes. I hoped that the negative connotation associated with the title of a cougar would be laid to rest. I hoped that the world would see that older women who date younger men are not just out to get laid. That many of us are simply looking for someone to spend our lives with. I hoped that the fact that most of simply connect better with men who are younger than we are, and while The Cougar may have done that in some ways, the truth is that no one’s going to get the message if they aren’t watching.

Oooof! Youre a better woman than I am… I couldnt get through the 1st 10 minutes of that show. The men seem to be a vacant pool of reality TV fodder. Maybe I should give it another shot. Ugh!

I have not watched an episode because I completely forgot the show was even on to tell you the truth but I did have high hopes that the show would become extremely popular to show that we women over 40 are just as smart, vibrant and sexy as the younger women.

I won’t lie Meghan. It’s not easy to sit through.

Very disappointing Tee. I had the same hopes as you. Sadly, I don’t think it’s going to happen that way.

Ugh Honey. That’s all I can even say.

You’re not missing out on a single thing Gwen.

I actually took the time to watch ALL the episodes online. While the “cougar” does definitely carry herself with class, it does cause the show to drag. The men, interesting characters to say the least. I think we are a catch 22 on this show. While so reality TV is all about hi jinks and drama, this show portrays a successful, intelligent, classy woman, which isn’t that how we want to be perceived? Not as some desperate middle-aged woman who needs a man, and will lay down with anyone. What strikes me the most about the whole thing, is only ONE guy asked her about her life, achievements, and biggest thing of all…CHILDREN. Just shows where these younger men’s minds are at. Just because a older woman prefers younger men, doesn’t mean we want the immaturity to go with it. Guess it is back to the drawing board on this one, I do have to agree this won’t be up for another season. *sigh*
