Did you know that the physical exertion associated with sex is equivalent to walking up two flights of stairs? Or that normal blood loss during an average menstrual period is 2.5 ounces? How about that the clitoris is made up of over 8,000 nerve endings and the only purpose it serves is to provide sexual pleasure?
If you didn’t not know the above facts, how much do you really know about your vaginal health? Understanding your vaginal health, as well as your overall health, can greatly impact your everyday life and your sex life. Knowing the state of your vaginal health and how to maintain and/or improve it, can help prevent medical issues such as yeast infections, bacterial vaginosis, sexually transmitted diseases, cervical cancer, and abnormal Pap smears.
Maybe your vaginal health doesn’t much cross your mind outside of your annual Well Woman Exam. Even then, you push it out of your mind once your Pap smear test results come back normal. The good news is that being aware of your vaginal health is pretty easy.
A good place to start is by getting tested for STD’s and getting a Well Woman Exam. Most clincs and doctor’s offices will offer STD testing in addition to the regular Pap smear test and, even if it costs a bit more in lab fees, being tested is necessary in understanding the state of your vaginal health.
There are also products on the market that help to maintain and improve vaginal health. Fresh Start, offered by Pure Romance, is an estrogen-free moisturizer that helps to provide instant yet long-lasting relief from vaginal dryness. This product is fragrance-free as well as odorless and colorless. Use this product before bedtime for two or three days a week.
A Vaginal Dilator is also a great tool for improving and maintaining vaginal health. These are tapered devices that stretch the vaginal walls in order to relieve pain and discomfort that may be present during penetration. The Vaginal Dilator Set, offered by Pure Romance, comes in 6 graduated sizes. Start by using the smallest, most comfortable dilator. Using a water-based lubricant, inset the dilator for and leave it inside the vagina for approximately 10-20 minutes. After a few weeks, move up to the next size.
We all know about the importance of maintaining your overall body strength, so why should it be any different when it comes to your vaginal strength? By toning and strengthening your pubococcygeus muscle, better known as the PC muscle, you are improving your vaginal strength and health.
Doing Kegel exercises is a great way to tone and strengthen the PC muscles. Locate your PC muscles by going to the bathroom and urinating. Stop and start your urine stream several times. The muscles you use to perform this action are your PC muscles.
Now that you know how to use your PC muscles, practice Kegel exercises by contracting the muscles three times a day for about 30 seconds to a minute. After a couple weeks, increase to a minute or a minute and 30 seconds. Try your Kegel exercises in multiple positions, such as standing, sitting, or lying down, for maximum effect.
Ben Wa Balls are a great product to assist you in your Kegel exercises. Simply lay down and insert a ball into the vagina and begin your Kegel exercises. Use one ball at first and, after a couple weeks, try using two balls. If this is uncomfortable, revert back to using one ball. Trying laying down while using one ball for several days and then use the ball while standing up. After several more days, increase to two balls while laying down and then while standing up.
