Sexual Health Mythbuster: All Lubricants Are NOT Created Equal!

I’ll bet you thought that lubricants were all the same. The truth of the matter is that they aren’t. There are different kinds of lubes designed for different uses. And, yes, women use them for several different reasons. These reasons include:

  • Alleviating vaginal dryness
  • Enhancing sexual pleasure
  • Adding fun to sexual activity
  • Making sexual activity more comfortable
  • During water play

It’s important to know what kind of lubricant is best for you based on your own needs/desires, personal preferences, and the type of sexual activity you are engaging in. It’s also important to note that not all lubes are safe with certain kinds of condoms and barrier methods of birth control or with all kinds of sex toys.

Water-Based Lubes

Water-based lubricants are gentle and non-irritating making them safe for everyday use. Because they are water-based, they absorb into the skin making them ideal to help alleviate vaginal dryness. They also have a re-wetting quality which actually creates even more lubrication with continual arousal.

This is the most common type of lubricant and the most widely used. It is safe for women of all ages and is ideal for older women, women who take medication such as hormones or antihistmines, and women who often experience vaginal dryness.

Products such as Pure Romance’s Just Like Me and Sweet Seduction are safe to use with latex condoms and other latex barrier methods of birth control and all types of sex toys.

Silicone-Based Lubes

Unlike water-based lubes, silicone-based lubes do NOT absorb into the skin making them longer lasting. This, of course, makes them ideal for extended lovemaking sessions. They are completely waterproof so they are also perfect for water play activities. If you’re into anal play, this is also the way to go because it is so long lasting.

While silicone-based lubes are also gentle and safe for everyday use, they do not have the same benefits to the vaginal tissues as water-based lubes.

Pure Romance’s Pure Pleasure is a great silicone-based lube which is compatible with latex condoms and other latex barrier methods of birth control. However, you should NOT use a silicone-based lube with a silicone toy as it may damage the material of the toy.

Playful Lubes

While playful lubes do not replace everyday lubricants, they do enhance sexual activity and pleasure. They should be used in conjunction with an everyday lube.

Sensations is a fun warming lubricant which is great to use during oral sex, body massages, and masturbation. It can be used during foreplay to help increase sexual arousal by keeping things new and fun. It comes in several fun flavors such as Cotton Candy, Green Apple, and Strawberries and Cream.

Whipped is another kind of fun, playful lubricant. It is a thick, creamy, emollient-based lube that is great for toys worn on a man’s penis such as the Jelly C-Ring. It can also be used for body massage and masturbation. Whipped also comes in fun flavors such as Bananas Foster, Orange Dreamsicle, and Strawberry Cheesecake.

A word of warning though. Because these playful lube contain oil, they are NOT safe for use with latex condoms and other forms of latex barrier birth control methods. Instead they should be used with polyurethane condoms.
