Be careful. Be smart. Be safe. World Aids Day.

We’ve been talking a lot about sex lately. Kira has asked the question Why Have Sex? and talked about Pornography and Relationships. I’ve urged you to consider balance in your relationships and how sex is about intimacy and connection. I’ve also talked about when porn becomes a problem and tried to dispel some myths about porn. And that’s all good.

But the truth is there’s more to think about than just having fun with sex. If you’re having unprotected sex, one night of fun change everything. That’s why 20-forty.com has joined together with bloggers everywhere to spread the news about World Aids Day through Bloggers Unite.

Did you know that in 2007, the estimated number of persons living with HIV worldwide was 33.2 million and there were 2.7 million people newly infected? Do you wonder if they thought about the consequences of having unprotected sex?

The truth is it’s easy to find yourself in a situation involving unprotected sex. You’re out on the town with the girls, you drink more than you should and the next thing you know you’re in bed with some dude you’ve just met. Maybe you’re caught up in the heat of the moment and, because of the alcohol, your judgment isn’t what it normally is. Next morning you realize you’ve done something pretty stupid.

You didn’t stop to think about the cold, hard facts.

  • At the end of 2003, an estimated 1,039,000 to 1,185,000 persons in the United States were living with HIV/AIDS.
  • HIV/AIDS was diagnosed for an estimated 9,708 women in 2005.
  • High-risk heterosexual contact was the source of 80% of these newly diagnosed infections in women.
  • Women with AIDS made up an increasing part of the epidemic. In 1992, women accounted for an estimated 14% of adults and adolescents living with AIDS in the 50 states and the District of Columbia. By the end of 2005, this proportion had grown to 23%.

Don’t become a statistic ladies. Be careful. Be smart. Be safe.
