So When Does Porn Become a Problem?
Kira was right when she said that porn becomes a problem when it begins to replace or take away from sex in the relationship, and she was right. But there are many other signs that your man, or even you, has a problem with porn.
In his book, DSI–Date Scene Investigation: The Diagnostic Manual of Dating Disorders
, Ian Kerner,PhD, says you have a problem with porn if you exhibit 13 or more of the following symptoms.
Signs of Porn Addiction
- Porn usage interferes with the ability to function at work and home.
- Porn is used to escape or numb feelings.
- Excessive amounts of money are expended on porn.
- An important relationship has been lost or jeopardized due to porn.
- Viewing porn is often chosen over dating and other social activities with singles, or worse, over sex with a partner.
- Porn-based masturbatory sessions satiate the desire for real-life sex.
- Compares members of the opposite sex to characters in porn and consequently deems them unattractive/unsexy and not worthy of pursuing for a real relationship.
- Suffers and intensified level of “sexpectations” to look and perform like a porn star.
- Exhibits a tendency to fetishize individual body parts and sex acts over responding to a partner’s needs.
- Stresses the need for privacy for computer time.
- Focuses on sexual arousal in lieu of genuine intimacy/desire.
- Carefully erases internet history and cookie cache.
- Displays a sense of disconnectedness or disorientation during partner sex.
- Show sudden interest to perform types of sexual positions that deviate from the established relationship sex-script.
- Exerts undue pressure on a partner to turn fantasy into action.
- Displays willingness to takes risks (legal or work-related) to view pornography.
If you are a man:
- A propensity to stereotype women as sexually responsive to any and all forms of sexual stimulation without regard to the physical mechanics of female orgasm.
- Experiences premature ejaculation and/or only desires stimulation of the head of the penis (because porn allows a viewer the the ability to fast-forward to scenes of intense sexual excitement, it often reinforces an accelerated process of arousal.
- Suffers from erectile dysfunction due to performance anxiety.
- Has an interest in Viagra or other sexual stimulants.
- Fixated on own penis size compared to others.
- Cannot tell an airbrushed body from a real one.
- Cannot discern a real female orgasm from a screaming phony.
- Believes that female pubic hair is an evolutionary throwback.
Unlike Kira, I’m a girl who likes her porn. I enjoy it with or without a partner. I’ve even been know to head to the strip club on occasion. Even so, it’s like anything else. When used in excess, it begins to interfere in your life and in your relationships.
Thoughts? Did you know there were so many warnings signs of porn addiction? Did you recognize any of the signs in someone you know?
