About 90% of Chinese university students surveyed say that internet ‘love’ satisfies their emotional needs. Whoa! I can’t even begin to imagine how. One of the things I miss the most about being in a relationship is the human touch. Holding hands, sweet little kisses, hugs. A little hard to get those needs met online.
The article also quotes one student as saying that there are many pressures involved when falling in love in the real world implying that these aren’t present in internet relationships. Having been in an internet relationship, I have to beg to differ. There are always pressures and pitfalls. Those in an online relationship are simply different. For example, in times of need a real life lover is usually a phone call away. Not so much with an online lover. You may have to wait for him or her to log on again to reach them. Not so convenient if your emotional needs need satisfying immediately.
And I think it’s sad that people have such a hard time forming real life relationships that they have to turn to their computers to find that emotional satisfaction. As the article says, there can definitely be negative effects. Thoughts?
